Salen Bay is hazard-free except for Salen Reef which dries 1.0 m. Pass well Eastwards of this reef. The bottom of the Bay is littered with military detritus, fishing gear and discarded moorings. Apart from this, the holding ground has proved average and a heavy anchor and chain cable, tripping line and buoy have proved necessary. The Bay is sheltered from all directions except the South-South-Easterly sector. All moorings and land above the H.W. mark are private. The Jetty has Scottish Executive Consent and Crown Leases for its four commercial mooring buoys and for an area of water for the Jetty approach. These are delineated by the Scottish Executive and the Crown on charts which are displayed on the Jetty with other local information. The Jetty and its adjacent ground above the H.W. mark to the road edge are unlit.

Salen Jetty was constructed circa 1820 under the supervision of Thomas Telford. The tidal times and heights are practically the same as Oban predictions. The depth of water alongside the Jetty is the same as the rise at Oban. At M.H.W.Springs the maximum depth alongside is about 4.0m. The Jetty has Red commercial mooring buoys for seasonal visitors' vessels up to 20 metres length staying overnight until noon the next day, marked JETTY 15 TONS V. At the Jetty there is a boarding or landing charge of £2 per person for vessels not using the Jetty moorings. Charges include parking of dinghies; rubbish and oily waste disposals. Customers' vessels may berth alongside and take fresh drinking water at no charge. Filtered Marine Red Diesel is available at competitive prices. There are long diesel and fresh water hoses. Charges are clearly displayed on signs. Operational hours are: 0600-1400 and 1500-2300. (LUNCH/SIESTA 1400-1500)
