TEYC News – March 2007

It’s been all hands on deck for the last month or so as the clubhouse has been radically transformed from a some what dark and dingy old fashioned bar, to a new light and airy bar with a modern wine bar look. The half naked mermaid figure has gone and has been replaced by an ash bar with a radical deep blue bar top. Many of the club’s members have given a huge amount of time and effort to totally transform the club house to ensure that the club was ready by the deadline of 22nd March for the Annual Dinner Dance due to take place the following evening. Not only has the bar been replaced, but the clubhouse has been given a totally new-look by changing the colour scheme, re-varnishing the dance floor and replacing the carpet.

With my camera at the ready I popped into club on the 22nd to get some photos of the finished article and I must say the final result is truly remarkable. The club not only looks inviting and modern, but it manages to mix a modern look with different aspects of the TEYC’s impressive history. The transformation is a credit to all who have given their time so willingly. Well done to you all!!!!!

So if you haven't been able to visit the club to see the transformation yet, here is a small gallery of how the clubhouse used to look, and how it looks now.

The fitting out supper took place earlier this month and despite the fact that the club house was mid refurbishment, nearly 50 people turned up for their fish and chip supper. And tickets for the dinner dance sold out very quickly which means that around 60 members and guest will be present at the black tie event.

The 2007 sailing season is now just beginning; however the weather is doing its best to halt the proceedings. Those hardy (or should I say foolhardy) enough to brave the winter weather only managed to race one race out of the entire series and ironically it turned out to be a bit of a drifter. Also the first races of the spring points had to be abandoned as the wind was blowing the doors off!  However this wind did not deter Ian and Sue who attended an Enterprise training day despite the inclement weather. And since they have spent the winter giving their boat a major refit including a fantastic new paint job and a whole host of technical gizmo’s no doubt they will bang on the pace this season!

I have now added the entertainment programme to the website (Click on the ‘Social Scene’ button to find it). You will see that the programme is full and very varied, so there should be something that appeals to everyone. Also the club now has a members suggestion box (located to the right of the doors into the Cadet Room), so if you have any ideas that you would like to put forward but were unsure how to do so, now you have no excuse.

And finally, should you be brave enough to venture down to the jetty in the next few days, please take care as one of the boards has been lifted by the recent high tides leaving a plank sized hole near the tender racks.

Cheers
