Elliotts shop situated in Lower Fore
Street Saltash is a microcosm of mid-20th century trading. Originally
taken over by the Elliott family in 1903 and run as a grocery shop until the
then owner, Frank Elliott, in protest over business rates and decimalisation
ceased trading and declared the shop to be a museum. The Tamar
Protection Society inherited the shop and its stock on Frank's demise and
have continued to run it as a museum ever since. If you have enjoyed looking
at this small sample why not visit the shop. Opening times may be
found below.
The picture
to the left is of the shop before its recent overhaul. Above the shop
is Mr Elliott's old drawing room, now the board room, and above that a flat
which is let to produce an income to help with maintenance. The Tamar Protection Society have a
robust maintenance plan in operation which secures the future of the shop
just as Mr Elliott would have wanted.
Left. A window display from Mr Elliot's
time. Anyone remember this once -popular tipple that was 'The Daily
Express to Health'?
Right. Just as Mr Elliott left it. The
interior of the shop frozen in time.
It seems that cider was a particularly
popular tipple at one time. The bicycle was restored and conserved by the
Society... but none of the trustees have the nerve to ride it!
Right. Another display from
time gone by. It shows the diversity of the stock on sale.
In this shot it is Carter's Seeds.
Left. Mr Elliott was not averse to
using his shop front to make his point. In this case, his view of
currency decimalisation is clear for all to see.
'Stop Metric Madness'
Right. An
undated photograph of Mr Elliot's Ford delivery van. Probably one of
just a few motorised vehicles in Saltash at the time.
Left.
Chivers Jellies at 9d just one of the delights on offer.
And on the
right is the shop front today. That's not really Mr Elliott
inside, just the blinds made to protect the shop from sunlight.
To the left
is a photograph of some of the stock. Note the prices in 'real' money.
Right. A label from the shop.
