Following on from John's article in the November issue, I like the idea of putting the outriggers on a single beam but I would prefer to mount them a bit more rigidly.

I haven't had time to try this yet but why not use an aluminium ladder?  Ladders are (I hope) of predictable strength and they are quite stiff, though perhaps not as stiff as you would like when used for their intended purpose.

Getting hold of good quality timber can be a problem even to people who know what they are doing.  Your local DIY superstore is unlikely to have any wood that is fit to be used in a boat but it will have aluminium ladders.  A ladder is an easy thing to lash and the lashings can't slide off.  It would also bear on the boat over a reasonable area and be less likely to shift about and come loose.  If you put the exposed part in a tight fitting sleeve its wind resistance would be quite low.
