I was intrigued by your remark about Stuart's open question.

I looked it up and saw that it was a query about a suitable anchor for an open canoe (Aug 99 edition).

Immediately there sprang to my mind a vision of one of my ex-wife's fruit cakes.  These were usually large round things with a big ding in the middle, and a couple of blows with a hammer and chisel would knock a hole right through and a chain or hawser could be fastened to it.

The reason I mention this is because after one slice I couldn't move, an ideal thing for a lee shore in a gale I'm told.  The only problem would be the weight, and I would recommend one on the bow and one on the stem, the trim being an important factor in canoe sailing, according to They who Knows.

If Stuart intends to pursue my suggestion, he would be well advised to go prepared for confrontation, because that is the lady's middle name. his claymore and targe and also his bicycle if he is to beat a hasty retreat back to 'Ye Banks and Brae's'.

Jim Brierley

PS I saw him with a rusty hook at one of the meets so he must have solved the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion Jim, and thanks for your letter, which I received when feeling low.  I was soon revived when I read your letter -Ed.
