Coastal Gathering (26 May-1 June 2007)
We gathered on Saturday 26th May at Resipole Campsite on Loch Sunart and sailed away the next day for destinations unknown. We spent a couple of nights at Loch Teacuis and then visited Tobermory before proceeding along the Sound of Mull as far as Salen before returning via different overnight stops - progress and itinerary always depends on the weather, conditions and our inclination.
Here are some video clips to show a bit about how it was - mixed weather but some cracking sailing:
If you are interested in joining us for the 2008 trip, which will be somewhere else (possibly Firth of Lorne area) then give Keith a ring on 01539534638 for a chat and more details. For more on the thinking behind this idea see the blurb below.
For the 2007 trip there were 10 people in 8 canoes.
Last Years report: The Island Gathering happened 27 May-4 June 2006
It went well with some interesting and tricky sailing at times -there were 8 people in 7 boats - some single hull and some with outriggers. The weather was mixed with some rain (snow on the hills!) and some sun; winds were good for some of the time and quite strong much of the time, but there were no mishaps that we could not deal with - only one capsize and a couple of minor man-over-boards. We enjoyed some fine cruising in the company of like-minded people, some idyllic wild camping and some exciting sailing!
Experience over recent months and years suggests that there are people with sailing canoes who are not interested in coming to existing Open Canoe Sailing Group events because:
| the venues or environment do not appeal enough. | |
| they prefer to use their canoes for camping or day trips in more remote/wilderness surroundings. | |
| racing is not their thing. | |
| other reasons!? - you tell us... |

But such people may well be interested in an informal gathering in wilder surroundings to camp and explore an area in like-minded company. They may well be experienced in "the outdoors" in any of a number of ways, such as open canoe paddling, back-packing, sea kayaking, dinghy cruising or others.
So if this idea interests you and you feel yourself capable of making your own way on coastal waters, then give Keith Morris a call on 01539534638 for a chat and to find out our plans for 2007. There will be plenty of options for exploring depending on wind, weather and personal preference. There will be a handful of us going anyway and you will be very welcome!
As at 18th May 2007 there are 11 people going in 9 canoes.
