History of the Club The Northern Rivers Sailing Club began its activities in 1988 with the aim of fostering racing, cruising and social activities for owners of modern production cruising yachts based on the Norfolk Broads north of Great Yarmouth. Membership, which is open to owners and their families from all areas, has risen from the initial seven to around sixty at the moment and the club celebrated its tenth anniversary in 1998. A varied programme of regattas has been developed which take place on both the rivers and broads at several venues. For racing and non-racing members alike there are allied social events from pub meals and barbecues to the more formal events of the end of season prize-giving dinner and start of season fitting out supper. Informal 'Cruises in Company' have proved to be a relaxing and popular alternative to the racing weekends, as have the 'Taste of Salt' weekend and the longer, more adventurous 'East Coast Cruise'. Situated a mile or so up river from Acle Bridge, The Anchorage has become established as our clubhouse and start line. Members are encouraged to use this facility at any time. If you like the sound of this welcoming and friendly group of like-minded sailing enthusiasts, why not give us a try? We actively encourage applications for membership from yacht, motorboat owners and non-boat owners alike. I must go down to the sea again, the lonely sea and the sky. I think I left my shoes there, I wonder if they are dry?
Well we are all back from the East Coast Cruise. We faced many challenges and came through smiling. A great fortnight of adventure on the high sea, an opportunity to polish up our navigation and tide skills with almost the complete range of English weather to contend with and some very early morning tides to arise for. All in all I think that everyone achieved their goals and all boats were put to the test with engineering skills to the fore on some! We are going to collate logs and produce a report in due course, suffice it to say that a great time was had by all and many super photographs taken. Congratulations and thanks to Nigel for all his hard work in planning and coordination.
Southern Rivers Cruise There are now 12 boats taking part. Clive Wright is hosting a planning meeting on Saturday 27th June. If we happen to be in Norwich on the 12th July, there is an opportunity to go and see our son Leo performing with a crazy Gypsy folk band, the Destroyers, in the Chapelfield Gardens as a part of the Lord Mayors Festival. I know how his music was enjoyed at the Italian Evening and thoroughly recommend this band that are playing three times this weekend at Glastonbury. Commodores Cup and Green Ranger Trophy I am attaching the entry forms for the above. Unfortunately the tides look as if we will be fighting the flood back to the Anchorage on Saturday, but with a strong wind, this may not be an issue. As usual we are providing a BBQ meal, with breakfast on Sunday if required. The cost is £12 for the BBQ and £2.50 for breakfast of bacon and eggs. I have a list of those that provided salads etc from last year and will be phoning around. If anyone not on my list would like to provide a salad etc., please let me know. Please bring raffle prizes.
Cruise in Company May 30th
This event attracted a good turnout, although the Horning Race Committee had decided to place the turning buoy in the channel, which deprived many of the expectation of a view from the Broad. We all eventually made our way to the Anchorage for a BBQ where our new box window seating was found to be a positive addition to our facilities.
Once again many thanks to James Wooster for his hospitality to Alan and Nancy for arranging it and those who provided the sandwiches and cakes.
Three Rivers Race We had members participating. There may be others that I am not aware of, but congratulations to John Tibbenham who crewed Reedling Bullrush to 27th place, Gordon Jewel and Karel Rout in Y Knot in 68th place and Alan Winters in his first ever 3RR in Chariot to 104th place. Race Training
We are hoping to have Mike McNamara as a guest for the Saturday evening of the Harvest Bowl on 12th September to run through race tactics and rules.
1st Aid Course
I haven’t forgotten this. I have a few good leads and some takers for a course and I shall be getting in touch with you shortly.
Taste of Salt Weekend
At the last committee meeting we discussed the possibility of a weekend cruise during August; through Yarmouth to perhaps Southwold and Lowestoft, returning via Mutford Lock.
Let me know if you would be interested and we will start planning!
