History of the Club

The Northern Rivers Sailing Club began its activities in 1988 with the aim of fostering racing, cruising and social activities for owners of modern production cruising yachts based on the Norfolk Broads north of Great Yarmouth.

Membership, which is open to owners and their families from all areas, has risen from the initial seven to around fifty at the moment and the club celebrated its tenth anniversary in 1998.

A varied programme of regattas has been developed which take place on both the rivers and broads at several venues. For racing and non-racing members alike there are allied social events from pub meals and barbecues to the more formal events of the end of season prize-giving dinner and start of season fitting out supper.

Informal 'Cruises in Company' have proved to be a relaxing and popular alternative to the racing weekends, as have the 'Taste of Salt' weekend and the longer, more adventurous 'East Coast Cruise'.

Situated a mile or so up river from Acle Bridge, The Anchorage has become established as our clubhouse and start line. Members are encouraged to use this facility at any time.

If you like the sound of this welcoming and friendly group of like-minded sailing enthusiasts, why not give us a try? We actively encourage applications for membership from yacht, motorboat owners and non-boat owners alike. Further details can be obtained from the Commodore, details below;

Founders Cup and Novice Cup August 23rd /24th

(I am indebted to Nigel for the bulk of this write up)

“In what has become an annual event, we were hosted by the Norfolk Broads Yacht club on the bank holiday weekend.  There were two races on Saturday and two on Sunday for the Founders’ Cup and a Novice race on Sunday.

The weather on Saturday was not as bright and sunny as the forecast had suggested but there was no rain and light wind for the first race.  Tom Parkinson and Chris Morcher in Pockets claimed line honours and were first on handicap.  Peter Coleman and Maggie Lomax in Quartet, which prefers heavier weather, came second on handicap whilst Peter Thompson and Andy Tufnail in Miss Penny came second over the line but third on handicap.

The race officers had predicted the wind would drop for the second race and this proved only too true.  Pockets made a good start, but on what turned out to be the wrong side of the broad for wind.  Miss Penny and Quartet got what little wind there was and made better progress.  Pockets crept up through the field and managed to finish second behind Miss Penny before and after handicap.  Quartet picked up a zephyr to finish with slightly more speed than the earlier finishers, and, despite the unfavourable conditions, finished third.

Newsletter 210                  September 2008

54 members and guests attended an excellent dinner in the NBYC on Saturday evening and a good time was had by all.

The first race on Sunday was sailed in a stiff breeze and at times torrential rain.  Taking advantage of local knowledge and the strong wind, Quartet was in the

lead for the first part of the race.  As the wind reduced, Pockets established a sufficient lead to beat

Quartet on handicap.  However, Pio and Sue Alterelli in their smaller Pandora – Impulse - came first on handicap by 20 seconds.

In the last race, the rain had stopped and the wind had reduced somewhat.  Quartet got a good start and was again ahead at the first buoy.  Nigel Wordingham and Roger Pritchett in Cho Cho San managed to emerge first from the pack of boats that next arrived at the buoy.  After a while, Cho Cho San and Pockets managed to get past Quartet and open up a sufficient gap to come in first and second.  John Tibbenham and Kevin Webb in Mandolin came in third on handicap.

It was particularly noted that there was a different winner for each race.

In summary the results were:-

Race 1

1   Pockets       Tom Parkinson, Chris Morcher

2   Quartet         Peter Coleman, Maggie Lomax

3   Miss Penny Peter Thompson, Andy Tufnail

Race 2

1   Miss Penny

2   Pockets

3   Quartet

Race 3

1   Impulse        Pio and Sue Alterelli

2   Pockets

3   Quartet

Race 4

1   Cho Cho San            Nigel Wordingham, Roger Pritchett

2   Pockets

3   Quartet

Allowing for the discard, the overall results were:-

1 Tom Parkinson and Chris Morcher in Pockets

2 Peter Thompson and Andy Tufnail in Miss Penny

3 Peter Coleman and Maggie Lomax in Quartet

The Novice Cup, sailed as one race on Sunday afternoon, was won on handicap by Kevin Webb in Wanderer ll from Julia Morcher in Pockets with Michael Powell in Atria third.

1  Wanderer ll    Kevin Webb

2  Pockets        Julia Morcher

3   Atria             Michael Powell

There were 10 entries for the Founders Cup and 5 for the Novice Cup.

On the Sunday evening many members stopped for the BBQ which was accompanied with the usual quantities of wine and laughter.

IS IT A JIB, GENOA OR WHAT?!

I thought it may interest fellow sailors to describe my experiences in ordering and receiving a new sail from Jeckells via Z Spars. It is widely known that I broke my mast some two months ago, as the result of which reinstatement included a change from roller-reefing to hanked headsails.

The providers of the new mast – Z Spars, ordered the replacement sail based on measurements already known to them. With the benefit of hindsight I should have done this direct with the sail manufacturers. Jeckells delivered the new jib sail to Z Spars, but upon fitting to Miss Penny it was found to be too long at the luff, and the wrong shape at the foot!! I approached Jeckells direct in order to resolve the luff length and to discuss the type of sail provided. They however rejected the suggestion that the sail was anything but as that originally ordered.

At the Wroxham meeting, when we trialled the new sail, some of you suggested that it was not a proper jib, but more like a storm or self tacking sail. The clew was some 4’ off the deck! I took this up again with Jeckells but they again defended their position and repeated that it was a working jib as ordered. They also pointed out that as Z Spars had ordered the sail, they were the clients and I therefore had to liaise with them. Never the less, and thanks to Tom who provided feedback to Chris Jeckells, Chris  liaised with the Managing Director at Z Spars and agreed to meet with me on Tuesday in order to reconsider the situation. At that meeting he agreed to provide me with a new sail, asked me what I wanted and took measurements. These were subsequently verified by a personal visit by him to Miss Penny on Wednesday, when he also pointed out one or two other anomalies.

Two days later the new sail was supplied, and fitted to the boat, and proves to be just what we wanted. Wow – how is that for speed of service!?

The moral of the story – if you want new sails - know precisely what you want (sizes colour etc), speak personally with the providers, and get them to measure your boat to ensure accuracy and to gain the benefit of their advice.

My grateful thanks to Tom, Chris Jeckells, Brian the Rigger and the whole of the Jeckells team ultimately for a very fast, professional and personalised service.
