Rowing Section -  Rowing Rules 

The following Rules have been set by the Minehead Sailing & WaterSports Club Rowing Committee. The Minehead Sailing & WaterSports Club Rowing Management Committee has also approved these rules.

General Rules

  1. Lifejackets – Lifejackets are to worn at all times when afloat. Note - the only exception to this rule is that an adult Rowing Crew of a French Seaboat may store their lifejackets at the front of the boat – this is however at the discretion of the Rowing Safety Officer following a risk assessment.

  2. No boat may be launched without the approval of a Rowing Safety Officer.

  3. The Rowing Committee will appoint all Rowing Safety Officers.

  4. The Rowing Safety Officer will perform a risk assessment prior to launch of the boat. The purpose of the risk assessment is to identify; who will Cox the boat, whether it is safe to launch, safety precautions to be followed during the row, and the area, nature, and length of the row.

  5. The Rowing Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring the boat and equipment is in a sea worthy condition prior to launch.

  6. The Rowing Safety Officer will sign the Logbook before and after the launch.

  7. A boat shall not go to sea without having a flare on board.

  8. Any damage to the Club’s equipment must be reported the same day to a Rowing Committee member.

Rules relating to the use of the French Seaboats

  1. The person performing the role of Cox on the boat must have received Cox’s training, and is responsible for the boats safe handling and ensuring all safety precautions are followed while afloat.
  2. The Rowing Crew must obey the instructions of the Cox at all times.

 Rules relating to the use of the Virus

  1. The boat may not be taken outside the agreed rowing area – this is set by the Rowing Committee and all Rowing Safety Officers shall be informed of the restrictions.
  2. If all of the crew are below the age of 16 a rescue boat shall also be available on the water.
