Minehead Rowers complete Eddystone Challenge in arduous conditions. Five Rowers from Minehead entered the Eddystone Challenge again this year on September 3rd in Plymouth. The Challenge is to row from the Mountbatten Centre in Plymouth Sound out around the Eddystone Lighthouse and back again, the course being about 25 miles long. Nineteen boats of various categories started the race and included Cornish Gigs, Celtic Long Boats, 24’ swept oar French boats that the Minehead Rowers use. However, shortly after the race started weather conditions deteriorated with north easterly winds gusting force 6 and seas of about 6 foot at the lighthouse. This made rowing very difficult indeed with seven of the nineteen boats having to be rescued or retire early. However, the Minehead crew, which included Sally Bellamy, Liz Bradshaw, Gareth Storey, Dave Legg, and Steve Worley, battled through the very tough conditions to finish the race first in their class after a time of 6 hours 10 minutes.
