Leader Open at Hickling Broad SC by Jane Wharmby 12th – 13th May 2001 6 visiting Leaders joined the 2 local boats at Hickling Broad SC for a glorious two day open event on 12 – 13 May. The perfect weather conditions made for an excellent start to the 2001 open series.
Saturday’s racing took the form of two passage races - to Potter Heigham Bridge and back - in a pleasant Force 3 breeze. Local team, Jane Pye and crew, led the fleet to the windward mark with Chris Wharmby and Jane Goulden and Mike and Jenny Sherwen swapping positions close behind. John Parker and James Wolfe sailed into a hole and were forced to watched as the rest of the fleet, including newcomers Jason and Emma Jackson, sailed by. Roger Morse and crew, Mike battled for 4th position with Bob Rhodes and Paul Dickinson who just beat them to the finish line.
Parker showed his true mettle in Race 2 which he won, having pulled ahead after a close tacking duel in the narrow river with daughter, Jane Pye. Wharmby was never far behind, but failed to close the gap, crossing the finish seconds behind Jane. Mike Sherwen just beat Rhodes and Mike Fitzgerald and Tim Dormer to the line, but retired after a possible protest.
Sunday’s racing was in traditional ‘round the cans’ format. Jane Pye led the fleet in two of the races, with John Parker finishing second and Mike Sherwen, with his new sails, consistently in the first 3 boats. A somewhat out of practice Wharmby finally got his act together in the last race and led the fleet from the start, with Mike and Tom Sherwen successfully fending off the Parker and Pye boats to come in 2nd.
