Jenter plans to attend a London Rally

Chart of the River Thames from Tower Bridge to Deptford Creek

An e-mail was sent to the Chairman of The Victoria Shadow Association and copied to me from John Walker on the 5th July 2011 to announce the rally and invite Victoria yachts to attend. Part of the message is reproduced below:

... We can hardly call it a Rally, there will be 3, possibly 4 Shadows (as last year), and we go into Limehouse on the 17th, moving into St Katharine's Dock on the 18th, leaving on Sunday, 21st. Unfortunately there may only be 2 Shadows staying until the 21st, but you know how it is when one is trying to organise a trip, people's circumstances change!

It would be very nice if you and any other Victoria sailors were able to join us, Peter Cosker says he will try to come ...

Good sailing to you. Kind regards, John

The small chart on the left shows both Limehouse Marina and St. Katharine Haven and their proximity to Tower Bridge and the City of London.

For Jenter to attend the rally, she will need to leave her home base of Burnham-on-Crouch at about half tide and take the ebb out of the river. Once well clear of the Foulness sands, she can turn to starboard and take the flood tide towards London. Even so, she is unlikely to get far past Gravesend before the tide turns against her.

The distance is simply too great to manage on a single tide and we will complete the trip over a period of two days with an overnight stop enroute.

The First Mate, Jenny, is unavailable and I have been fortunate in securing the services of Arnold Robinson, member of The Victoria Shadow Association and owner of the Victoria 26 cutter, Shikara.
