WHEN
WE SAIL
|
| When we sail | ||||
| GWS
sails between April and October weather permitting. Most sailing takes
place on Thursday afternoons between 1.00 pm and 5.00 pm, when priority
is given to new sailors. Normally, waterproof clothing and safety equipment
can be borrowed, and free instruction is provided. Sailing usually ends
with a hot drink and a slice of cake. |
||||
| Recreational Sailing | ||||
| At present, recreational sailing takes place on Thursday afternoons when priority is given to instruction of new sailors. The emphasis on Thursday is on fun sailing rather than racing (although fun doesn't imply that our instructors don't take their responsibility for safety seriously). |
||||
| Individual Sailing | ||||
| Members of Grafham Water Sailability who have reached a standard of sailing approved by the Chief Instructor may also sail at times and on days other than Thursday afternoon. Those wishing to use this extra sailing time must conform to the instructions displayed on the Club notice board. |
||||
| Competitive Sailing | ||||
| GWS
encourages competitive sailing, and our volunteer instructors provide
race training on some weekends. Individual members and their helpers travel
the country to race at various regattas. As a club we are one of the most
active and successful disabled sailing clubs in the country. |
||||
| Therapeutic Sailing | ||||
| GWS provides opportunities for disabled people in various institutions and organisations to experience sailing as a therapeutic activity. | ||||
| What we sail | ||||
Most of our sailing and instruction is done in the Challenger class of boat. The Challenger is a trimaran designed to be sailed by people with disabilities single-handed. The Challenger is a flexible boat which can accommodate most physical disabilities.
|
|
We also sail a Drascombe Longboat. This is a very stable boat which can carry up to 8 people plus a crew or 2. We use it to take people sailing who require greater support than would be available in a Challenger.
