Frampton laid out warm sunshine and a gentle breeze for Frampton’s Enterprise open.  The race officer had miraculously provided wind and claimed to have cancelled the rain too. Phil Kirk and James Askew (Frampton) led race one from start to finish.  Roger Appleby and Jane Beynon (Frampton) held 2nd place for a lap until Ian Wakling and Sean O’Neil (Bristol Corinthian) sneaked past and defended 2nd until the finish.  The next four boats remained close together throughout the race and places changed on every lap.  Geoff Coxe and Sue Beynon (Frampton) were enjoying their pace with their new sails which helped them to fend off the close competition to finish 3rd.  In only their 2nd open Rachael and Alan Hamilton (Bristol Corinthian) pulled of a spectacular overtaking move at the last mark gaining two places to finish 4th.

Race 2 Saw Geoff and Sue lead at the first mark closely followed by Phil and James.  The lead changed on the second beat and Phil and James pulled out a lead which they held to the finish. David Marsden and Steve Higgs moved up to 2nd for a lap however Geoff and Ian were never more than a boat length away and these three boats had a close battle for the whole race. As the wind lightened Geoff and Sue gained 2nd and led Ian and Sean to the finish.  Keith Merdith and Harry Web new to the Enterprise and courageously sailing their first open were improving their boat speed and technique all the time. It was good to see their hard work and determination paying off.

The third and last race was sailed in a stiff breeze.  Ian and Sean started well to lead at the first mark from Dave and Steve.  These BCYC club mates were locked in a duel for the first two laps with Roger and Jane snapping at their transoms.  Phil and James had wrongly thought they were over the line at the start and had gone back to restart.  By lap two they were in contention with the leaders and were able to take the lead. Dave and Steve passed Ian and Sean to stay in 2nd. They held these positions until the finish with Ian and Sean in third.

Phil and James had won the event with minimum points ahead of Ian and Sean in 2nd and Geoff and Sue in 3rd both with 5 points.

As usual the conditions at Frampton had varied in strength and direction challenging all sailors alike.  The laser fleet did an excellent job of running the racing, John Crelin helped by taking the entries and acting as shore support and Jean kept us fed.
