Calliope, Ceres and Demeter Sailing Hydrofoil Catamarans

Joddy Chapman

This web site is about my small sailing hydrofoil catamarans and contains shortened versions of two papers:

"Design and Development of a 4.9m Hydrofoil Catamaran", Catalyst Magazine, Vol. 1 No. 2 July 2000. (Originally presented to a conference in Hobart in January 1999).

"The Rise of the Hydrofoil and the Displacement of the Hull", EJ & GC Chapman, 16th Chesapeake Sailing Yacht Symposium, March 2003 contains just about all we know. Order your full copy of the proceedings of this conference from the CSYS. NB the CSYS have a new web site, so I hope this updated link gets you there.

There are a host of other useful websites - look for Rohan Veal's development of John Ilett's hydrofoil Moth, and the new M4 dinghy being developed in the UK.

Demeter, part-completed just in time for the 2005 Weymouth Speed week (18.9 knots) - using Ceres' old foils. I only got her afloat in August this year (2006), still without her new, high speed (!) foils. Still, I thought I should enter Yachts and Yachting's Speed Freaks, (http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/speedfreaks/) just to encourage the others...

Ceres in October 2002

(Those with a classical education will know that "Ceres" is the Roman name of the Greek goddess "Demeter". In this case Demeter is essentially the same as Ceres, only lighter)
