East Cowes Sailing Club members acquire the Monarch!
Two East Cowes Sailing Club members,
Matthew O'Crowley and Ian Rees, have aquired what is reputed to be the world's smallest
commercially operated paddle steamer, PS Monarch. The vessel is 42' and is
powered by a 100 yr old compound diagonal steam engine which is fed by an oil fired
boiler. Monarch is currently licensed for 12 passengers.
A public service is set to commence in April 2008 following an extensive refit and total
change of livery. Some members may have seen Ian and Matt playing about with their steam
launch, Pegasus which is kept on the club pontoon. Pegasus is now
mechanically sound (after many experiments) and this winter will benefit from a cosmetic
overhaul and fitting out. Unfortunately, after that she will be advertised for sale as it
is expected that PS Monarch will be taking up rather a lot of time!!
