Competition Report 13th April 2008
Hi all.
Report on the first competition of the season fished on Sunday 13th
of April. This was an as expected turn out with only the keenest of anglers putting in an
appearance, four boats left the pontoon all returning weight to the scales, Eddie and John
in Wild Thing headed west to Saltmead, Me and Jason in Womble went
straight to Peel Bank, Des and Ron in Hobgoblin settled for Norris, and Leigh
shot straight across to the Brambles
Weather. The first hour looked really promising but the SSW wind soon got up and made it a rather blustery day's fishing, with wind stronger than tide we were being blown all over the place making it a rather frustrating time, with heavy showers and hail thrown in just for good measure
Catch. Most anglers had their quota of doggies with a few smuts as well, John Munt on Wild Thing landed the heaviest fish of the day, a nice 12lb 1oz Thornback Ray.
Well done to all anglers that took part and hopefully we will see you all on 4th May for the next one.
Competition Report 11th May 2008
Hi all.
Report on the second comp of the season fished on Sunday 11th of May.
Well where do we start ? All four boats that entered the first competition couldnt fish this one due to 'sick' boats and work commitments, Eddie had a hydraulic hose go on his leg (Wild Thing) as for mine (Womble) after extensive electrical work carried out and double checked by fitter, I have now lost ignition on No 2 & 3 cylinders. The other lads had work commitments, but on the plus side we had 3 new anglers fish this comp, Paul Masterton (Alfie), and father & son duo Kev and Adam Frohman, in their new boat, well done lads, thanks for you support.
Weather. From where I was in the garden it was probably the hottest day of the year so far, great sunshine in a slight easterly gusting now and then, this meant every man and his dog was out on the water making it choppy.
Catch. Paul Masterton was top rod with 4 smuts, too many doggies to count and a nice 11lb 6oz thornback. Adam was second with 2 smuts 3 dogs. And the old man sat it out to eventually get that elusive doggie J. Well done to all anglers that took part and hopefully we will see you all on May 25th for the next one.
Competition Report 1st June 2008
Hi all.
Report on the 3rd & 4th comps of the season.
1st report for Sunday 25th May (cancelled due to weather)
Report for Sunday 1st of June
Early start for boats that wanted to do some distance, and for Eddie and john on wild thing it paid off. Both getting their quota of dogs and bagging up on the bream too ,I spent the day drifting around from Compton to Freshwater to no avail, while Paul in Alfie and team Froment in Donald started later and settled for the Solent.
Weather. Probably only four people know this but it was pretty wet first thing, and looked like it was going to hang around for a while but the further west we went the better it got and turned into a flat day with hardly any wind at all coming from the east.
Catch. John munt was the man again this week with a bag of bream + dogs for a total of 18lb. Paul was 2nd and Eddie 3rd. I chucked the anchor down for the last half hour in desperation and got a brace of dogs. And Kev and Adam had one apiece.
Well done to all anglers that took part and hopefully we will see you all on June 15th for the next one.
Competition Report 15th June 2008
Hi all.
Another early start saw Eddie head towards Thorness, while I went in the opposite direction, heading for the Forts for live bait and on to drifting, but mackerel were on the large side, so stayed in the Solent at anchor. Des & Ron in Hobgoblin, were just happy to be fishing anywhere, Paul in Alfie and Adam & Kev in Donald all headed to the North Channel.
Weather. Another great day with a wnw force 2 and plenty of sun, flat calm first thing and stayed that way pretty much right through the competition.
Catch. Today was a day for the Solent after missing the garage the night before and not having enough fuel to do any distance. I had a trip round to Ventnor on Friday and had a Pollock and bass bag of 60lb + on the drift and was expecting to do the same today, but it wasnt to be, so sat at anchor at Ryde Middle and had a mixed bag of dogs, Smoothound, skate and a small tope which was enough to give me first place on the day. Paul was second with a doggie and Smoothound bag, and Eddie third with the same fish. Kev Froment finally got the better of his son with 4 dogs and 1 smut, while Adam had to sit and watch until he eventually had a brace of doggies. Ron had 1 doggie and the best bite Des had all day was his bacon roll! Well done to all anglers that took part and hopefully we will see you all on June 22nd for the next one.
Report for Saturday 12th July.
A long day for those who were keen to show willing. With an 11 hour session in weather that could only be described as a bit blustery, starting at 7am fishing till 6pm for tidal reasons, we all kept an eye on the forecast through the week to see if the wind was going to drop for Saturday but it never did. With the weather forecast being what it was we had a few boats cry off for the comp preferring to go on the Sunday, which showed good weather on the met office web site, but we did welcome Newcomers Ian and Scott Willis, in their new duver Puff along.
Weather. not the best of days for being at anchor with strong WNW winds making it uncomfortable.
Catch. New comer Ian Willis was top rod, going over his quota for smuts including a nice 11lb fish and 1 doggie, and son Scott had 1 Smoothound. I had my fill of doggies. Eddie called it a day early (good move) and good old Des who always seems to be happy no matter where he chucks the anchor over, only had 1 small tope , mind you he still hasnt stopped talking about it yet! Well done to all anglers that took part and hopefully we will see you all on July 27th for the next one.
