Training at DSC

Dorchester SC has a well established, Royal Yachting Association (RYA) recognised, sailing school that has taught people of all ages (6 to 60+) to safely sail and drive power boats for many years. All tuition is organised under the supervision of a RYA Senior Instructor and participants will gain a nationally recognised certificate in sailing.

Sailing courses

The Sailing School offers two basic courses:

Level 1 - On this course, we start with the assumption that you have never been in a sailing boat before and, by the end, you will be able to sail in light winds with an instructor in the boat.

Level 2 - By the end of this course, you will be safety conscious, have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of sailing, in light winds, without an instructor on board.

These are generally combined into a single course of five to six days which are generally run on Saturdays.

The school also offers more advanced course for the mode experienced and refresher courses for those who just need to re-discover those lost skills.

Full details of current courses are given here (doc, pdf, html).

Powerboat courses

Powerboat courses are run to assist the main activity of the club by providing safe competent drivers for the rescue boats which accompany sailing and racing at the club. The club operates a number of Dories which are used for safety cover and race management. Full details of all powerboat courses are available in the RYA Powerboating Logbook available from the Office.

The Level 2 course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to be a competent powerboat driver. The Safety boat course provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes for racing or training activities.
