TRAINING AT DORCHESTER SAILING CLUB

Dorchester Sailing club is a recognised RYA Training Centre offering a wide range of dinghy sailing courses under the internationally recognised National Sailing Scheme and Youth Sailing Scheme. RYA recognition is your assurance that our training is delivered safely, and to a high standard, by suitably qualified instructors.

Sailing courses

Adult Basic Skills
We normally offer this course twice a year spread over 5 or 6 Saturdays. The course combines RYA levels 1 and 2 and by the end of the course you will be safety conscious, have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of sailing, in light winds, without an instructor on board. Typically adults who have completed this course are able sail for pleasure and join in club races.

Adult Advanced skills
We also offer more advanced courses for the more those who wish to develop their skills further, including RYA Level 3, Start Racing, and Sailing with Spinnakers, and refresher courses for those who just need to re-discover those lost skills.

Youth Courses
Our youth training has been incredibly popular in recent years, especially as our lake is an ideal environment for families. We currently only offer youth training to members.

For children from the age of about 8 up to about 11 or 12 (depending on size) we teach in Optimist dinghies. For those 12 and above we have Topper, Pico and Feva dinghies available. We do most of our youth training on Sundays, using 2¼ hour sessions dovetailing our activities with the main race programme and leisure sailing activities. This format is particularly popular with families.

Youth courses typically run for 6 Sundays and follow the RYA Youth Sailing scheme which is broken into 4 stages. Almost all youth sail training including schools sailing follows this syllabus and so young people who also sail at other centres can develop their skills in a logical fashion.
