River Greta October 2005 A meeting took place on the 4 th October 2005 with Keswick anglers, National Trust, National Parks, English Nature, Cumbria Canoeists, Calvert Trust, Environment Agency, the BCU River Advisor for the Greta and a representative from the Derwent Owners Association. It was agreed that canoeing can take place on the Greta 365 days a year with some minor restrictions. During November and December paddling on the Greta will be restricted based on water level. i.e. the river must be at a certain height before paddling is allowed. What that height will be, is being determined with Keswick anglers and the BCU Regional Access Adviser shortly. It will very likely involve a mark being placed on the bridge at Threlkeld, and if the water is above that mark, we can paddle. Below it, paddlers are asked to keep off so that the environmental impact is limited. This concerns the salmon stocks and relates to damage to the spawning fish and spawning beds. The three tributaries will have a 2 month restriction (November and December) when no paddling should take place. These are the St John's Beck, the Glenderamackin and the Glenderaterra. This agreement increases access to the rivers and we ask that paddlers will accept it and respect it. Further details will follow once more known. Receive latest news and updates by email.
