This is a copy of an email dated 22-01-02 from Charles Stewart, the Local Access Officer for the River Eamont:

"Hi there

I thought I might share the following communication; in other words the Eamont appears to be returning to a more normal situation.

Dear Mr Stewart,

Thank you for your enquiry.  Access to the River Eamont is now subject to the same restrictions as prior to the Foot and Mouth outbreak.  These are as follows:

If you wish to exit the River at Brougham Castle, please seek permission from Mr J S Slack at Brougham Castle Farm, Tel. (01768) 862123.

If you wish to continue downstream to the River Eden please seek permission from Mr J Robson at Clarke Scott-Harden, Tel (01768) 869000.

Please make sure that you inform the Estates office (telephone number above) of the details of any canoeing trips planned.
