BCU River Advisors* in Cumbria

Below is a listing of Rivers and Lakes and the BCU Local River Advisors.

Also look at the News Page as minutes of meetings often have other recent details of relevance and interest.

Regional Access Advisor (RAA)

Be aware that things can change, so what was once accessible, may not be next time you paddle. We will endeavour to keep this page up to date, and should be your first place to look for latest info.

Please contact River Advisor  in advance of travelling. Follow up paddle trip with feedback.

When contacting BCU Local River Advisor please bear in mind that they are unpaid voluntary local paddlers. In the first instance, please write 2 weeks in advance by e-mail or by post enclosing SAE, when telephoning use a sociable hour and if necessary call back when they are in rather than expect them to call you. Where there is no BCU Local River Advisor, contact voluntary BCU Regional Access Advisor (RAA).

* The English Access Committee has decided to change the name of Local Access Advisor to Local River Advisor, although there is the opportunity for the LAO title to be used under some circumstances.

(2/2007) Issues with access at Half Way House (more commonly known to paddlers as 'muddy' layby) are ongoing. The owner of the adjacent property has had cause for complaint over a long period of time about the use of the spot by large groups that have at times been very disturbant to the tranquility of the place, with instances of bad language being used.

A threat of a fence being erected to stop access has been made. This does not carry permission to do so at the moment.

A meeting was held on the 12th Feb 2007 between the land owners at the site (Friends of the Lake District), The Lake District Natonal Park, and Greg Bartlett (River Access Officer for Cumbria) to discuss progress to a
suitable outcome. The owner of Half Way House was not present.

Awaiting a positive outcome, can all users please access the river with the utmost consideration for the local residents, and move on from the access pool as quickly as possible.

Rothay (below Grasmere) Top (3/2007) There is now a very concerning situation on the Rothay. The owner of the cottage on the river left at Pelter Bridge rapids is understandably fed up with groups of paddlers descending the rapids (sometimes at very low levels thus ending up dragging boats down the river), getting out at the bottom by the bridge into her garden, spending hours playing and teaching in the pool at the bottom, dragging boats across her garden (sometimes up her garden path to get back for another run), having picnics on her lawn, and generally abusing her land. When confronted, these disrespectful people are answering in abusive ways, and making statements that can only be construed as bullying.

I find it amazing that in this day and age when we as paddlers should be doing everything we can to better the access situation, that organised groups and clubs are behaving in such a way. This behaviour is not acceptable of anyone, yet alone someone in charge of an organised group.

Please respect the access on this river, and as is clearly stated in up to date guides, there is NO access to any of the banks at Pelter Bridge rapid, and that also means NO portaging. Paddlers should engage this part of the river with the mindset that they must run the rapid and move on. This is not the place for lengthy sessions and skills workshops! If the river is too low to negotiate the rapids, don't get on.

Please respect this and keep the access to this river for us all for the future. Do not run it in large groups (30+ in one go has been witnessed!), and respect the residents wishes and tranquility.

(2005) National Trust have put up sign saying "No Canoeing on river Brathay(!). No "big loud group" use below Rydal Water" at White Moss Common. Contact access Advisor, for explanation.

Martin Clark Banerigg Guest House, Grasmere. Cumbria LA22 9PW (2005) Group use below Rydal Water from White Moss Common, ask for further explanation.
