River Eden Clean Up Day: Saturday November 19 th 2005.

Langwathby to Lazonby.

In co-operation with Eden Rivers Trust and the Environment Agency, Cumbria Canoeists would like to invite paddlers to come and join us to do ‘our bit’ to help the river environment.

We are looking at starting from Langwathby and finishing at Lazonby a trip of approximately 5 miles. This is because it allows us to finish on the new set of ‘canoe access steps’ put in at Lazonby earlier this year. This was a combined venture with the EA and Eden Rivers Trust but also with financial help from Cumbria Canoeists, and the NW and NE, BCU regions. But perhaps most importantly with the kind help and permission from Lazonby parish council.

Because of very limited parking at Langwathby we intend to meet at the riverside car park in Lazonby at 10:30am and we will shuttle canoes and people up to the start. Any boat is suitable, but open canoes are ideal as it allows easy access to the banks to pick rubbish up and then carry it. Plastic collection bags will be provided but if you have some old gloves then they would be useful. A skip is being provided by the EA at Lazonby. A similar day was run on the Eamont 2 years ago where we easily filled the supplied skip. A target for this day.

The river is grade 1 to 2 apart from one grade 3 Ledge, at Eden Lacy, which can easily be portaged or lined down. In normal conditions it therefore is an ideal novice/improver trip, though the river is very fast and powerful if in flood conditions (which it is as this is witten! ).

It is hoped that you can come and support this important day and look forward to seeing you.
