October 2003

Welcome again to our newsletter. Here we are in the midst of what is promised to be an extended
Autumn and the most colourful for the last thirty years. This is due to the dry summer we have just experienced. Could we please have more of them? As boats come out of the water there is still plenty of reasonable weather to work on them, removing sails and lowering masts before the winds make it
difficult and neighbours complain about disturbance.

It was a pleasure to attend the Mexican Evening which was a good opportunity for a get together. Those unable to attend missed a very enjoyable social event. Read further to find out about the next events as this is a busy and eventful time.

For those people who live in or are interested in Hightown there is now a reprint of My Hightown by Joe Bulman available. Jan Brannigan went to the launch last week and she told me that the book has been updated and there are some additions. There are plenty of reminiscences in there. Had we known it may have been possible to put something about the Sailing Club in it. If you are interested it is available from Pritchard's Book Shop or from the Library. My Hightown costs £5.00.

The General Committee Meeting took place last night, as the sailing season comes to an end the main focus of the meeting turns to other matters and the reports get shorter but even so it is only by going to the meetings that one realises how much work some of the Club Officers do quietly behind the scenes.
Here is just a flavour of last night's meeting.

THE COMMODORE told the meeting that he and Mark Meadows had represented B.S.C in The
Commodore's Cup in Liverpool. Unfortunately they didn't do too well in the race due to an altercation with both the tide and a cardinal buoy! However they both enjoyed the event.

THE SAILING COMMITTEE had a short meeting where they discussed the final results of the racing and the prize giving. Moorings were also discussed and Mooring S2 was reallocated to John Newton and approved at the General Committee Meeting last night.

Six B.S.C boats went to the Albert Dock for the Clipper's return. Congratulations to all who took part in the Race .(Two of our club members did boat delivery on the Clippers later, to the South but I have no details of those trips yet. Ed)

Mystic is now ready for disposal and the Yacht Cathy is up for sale.

FOR SALE.

THE YACHT CATHY.

BIDS IN EXCESS OF £250.00 TO THE COMMODORE

NOTE. THE BOAT MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE YARD.

WOOD WOOD WOOD
2ND NOVEMBER 10,30 AM.A WOOD GATHERING PARTY
FOR BONFIRE NIGHT.

With reference to the gate which is difficult to open Alan Roe has spoken to John Newton who has offered to make the gate in into two halves. This will be done when he returns from holiday. You are reminded that the collecting of wood is necessary for bonfire night. Please come and help.

THE REAR COMMODORE told the Committee that the early opening of the clubhouse, as reported in the last newsletter, will not now take place. This idea may be mooted again in the future.

There is very little work left to do on the bar and it will soon be possible to use the shutters, thus making closing up much easier. Thank you to John Myerscough for the new door. We now have two new people working in the bar, Emma will work on Friday and Andy will work on Sunday. Lorna has retired and will be invited to Prizegiving for a presentation.

THE HON SECRETARY has written a letter of thanks to Paul Wren for the donation of the bar foot rail and also for all the other donations that Paul has made to the club. Mark said that Carole will represent BSC at a Cocktail Party at Royal Mersey Yacht club next Saturday.

Our Commodore will represent the Club at the Remembrance Service to be held at the Hightown War Memorial on Sunday 9th November. The Commodore and the Hon Secretary will also attend the Annual Gentleman's Dinner on Friday 14th November.

Mark has also dealt with other correspondence which you will find on the board.

THE HON TREASURER. In his usual quiet way David said that we have a reasonably healthy bank balance but the only sources of income now are the bar profits and the social events. In view of the deliberate fire at West Cheshire Sailing Club and the losses they have suffered he has been looking at and updating our insurance policies where necessary. David has received a letter of thanks for our donation to Southport Offshore Rescue Trust.

THE HON MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY
recommended a prospective new member to the committee.
Some of you will have seen and spoken to Eddie Breen who lives in Formby. Eddie has bought
Sheranta B and has been working hard in the yard recently on her. The Committee voted unanimously in favour of his membership. Please welcome Eddie to the club.

THE SOCIAL NOTES. The Mexican Evening was well supported and was very enjoyable. It made a welcome profit of around £300 .00. Well done everybody! The next social event is of course the Bonfire Night.

BONFIRE NIGHT
5TH NOVEMBER 2003
FIRE LIGHTING TIME 6.30 PM

HOT DOGS AND OTHER GOODIES AVAILABLE
THE BAR WILL BE OPEN

ANY OTHER BUSINESS. Phil Wright informed the committee that workmen would be fixing the outside lighting Thursday morning. When that is done it remains for the power to be connected.

Bill Broadbent has accepted the Club's invitation to be the Guest Speaker at the Prize Giving in November.

There has been a problem with possible random firing from the Range. This is being dealt with by letter. Were they firing at seagulls?

There has been a positive response to the roof appeal. It was thought that we need more time to raise more money. You will hear about this from the Commodore.

The Commodore has been thinking about the forthcoming Centenary of the Club in four years and he thinks that some forward planning will be a good idea. This is another matter that will be discussed
further at a later date.

CLUB PEOPLE
Madam Commodore. Maggie has had a second hip replacement this week. Best wishes to her for a speedy recovery.

Arthur Mount Sadly I have to report that Arthur is in hospital again. Arthur has the "superbug"
MRSA picked up from his previous stay in hospital.

Pat McGregor is now recovering from a second thyroid operation. We all send best wishes.

Corinne Gillard sister of Rory will be travelling to the Seychelles to follow the course of an ancient
Voyage. Corinne has given up her job as assistant to the harbourmaster in Weymouth after nine years.
She has flown out to join the crew of a replica 8th century ship. The 20 metre long wooden boat is
skippered by Philip Beale of Lulworth. He is recreating one of the ancient voyages made by Indonesian
Sailors in their native Borobudur ships. Although the ship is as sparse as you would expect Corrine is taking a laptop and a digital camera and hopes to relay information about the trip back to England.
Her progress can be monitored on www.borobudurshipexpedition.com
This must be a most exciting adventure and we all wish her luck. Keep in touch through Kari her mum.
