February 2002

Editor's Comments The meeting held in the clubhouse on 12th February proved to be one of the more interesting ones. A great deal of discussion and planning took place. Some of the planning concerns the
long term but much of it the near future. Some of the discussion was about the effects of the strong winds combined with high tides and the damage that they had done. I went down to watch one day and I was startled to see the size of some of the debris being tossed around. I fully expected to see the Black Hut disappear as the water swirled around it. A lot of the debris was left on the lawn, including bricks washed out from behind the wall. Quite a number of High town's residents turned out to watch and other club members also arrived to watch. The only creatures to revel in it were the gulls and the ducks. The weather has really caused a lot of work making repairs necessary. If you receive this letter before Sunday 17th February are you able to turn up to the club on that morning at 10.30 to help to move some of the bricks and to give a couple of hours to the club in some way?

The Commodore's Report. Peter told the meeting that he had represented the club at both the Dee and West Lancs Sailing Clubs. He was pleased to say that presentation of burgees to past Commodore was well supported and was an enjoyable evening. The Fitting Out Dinner was also a very good evening. Thanks were expressed to Stan Warren for his organisation and to Arthur Mount for his help. A donation of £20 was sent to the Scouts for the use of their tables. The weather had caused ravages to the roof and lawn and also to the gabions. The wall saved the clubhouse from worse damage.

The Hon Sailing Secretary David's report encompasses those of the Vice Commodore, the Club Captain and the Yard and Berthing Master. If they have anything further to add they will do so after this. It saves a lot of repetition. All members were present at the sailing meeting and they were pleased to welcome Austin Bridges as a committee member. They discussed the extra day holiday, which will be given this year to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. This is the 3rd June and Tuesday 4th June is the Spring Bank Holiday. On these two days the tides are unsuitable for racing. Our first racing weekend is Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th of May and will be known as May Weekend Racing. To commemorate the Jubilee Year within the club, we will rename the Midsummer Race on Sunday 16th June. It will be known as The Golden Jubilee Race.

The Y.B.M asked if he could allocate mooring N23 To Little Mischief on the grounds of seniority. He also wishes to withdraw N19 from Eos and N21B from Sophie, as they have not launched in the last two years. One of these will no longer be used, as there is too little space. There will be space in the yard to accommodate Little Mischief. This was agreed.

The Club Captain has suggested the there should be more Club Cruises. When they are planned briefing meetings could be held one month before the date for discussion and to look at the charts. He has also ordered poles and chain for the re perching of the River by the SPRING WORKING PARTY on SAT. 6th APRIL.

The dinghy slip by the club is in a desperate state of repair. Each year repairs are necessary causing quite a big expense. As mentioned previously Dave Wilcox has prepared plans for a replacement to be phased in. To this end D. Rowles and B. Woods met with Kevin Pope who is willing to undertake the work as soon as possible.
The Welcome Pack for new members is ready to give out and will be given also to recent new members.
There is a reminder from John Heyworth about your PORTSMOUTH YARDSTICK NUMBERS.
The RYA will be issuing the year 2002 Portsmouth Yardstick numbers during March and the club numbers will then be corrected for the year. After approval by the Sailing Committee they will be posted on the Sailing Notice Board.

The Rear Commodore Dave Wilcox reported that he was awaiting the delivery of hard core to complete the small dinghy slip. The large dinghy slip cannot be repaired as it is too badly damaged by corrosion and the recent storms. Much of the sea end is washed away. Because the site is of special scientific interest we cannot build at the side and therefore he proposed that K Pope should carry out Phase 1. Phase 2 can be left until later. Dave said that a lot had been learned whilst doing the small dinghy slip and this would be taken into account. There was a great deal of discussion involving all members and the Hon Treasurer but the outcome was that the work is absolutely necessary and therefore the materials will be ordered immediately and the work carried out in a month. Alan Roe will be in attendance during the work.

The working party held before the Fitting Out Dinner was a success and thanks went to those who attended and for the lunch provided. A very big Thank You went to David Rowles who has completed the electrical work behind the bar this week. Thanks also to Theo Smith and Trevor Meyer who are replacing the small table tops. Those already completed look very good. David Warren told the meeting that Arthur Mount was taken ill on the way home after planning to carry out work on the clubhouse roof. All were sorry to hear that and best wishes were sent to Arthur. Dave hopes to get insurance for the roof repairs.

Hightown Parish Council and others wish to hold a Jubilee celebration in the village, which includes the Club. Trevor Meyers is representing the club on this and has suggested that a bonfire should be held on the beach. Another suggestion by Dave is that the club should provide a beacon as part of a national chain of beacons. This will have to be purchased and will stand on a ten foot pole. If we did that it could be used at other times like the New Year's Eve Party. It was agreed that we go ahead.

The Vice Commodore suggested that the club should form a composite plan for the development of the club over the coming years. As you can imagine this gave rise to many flights of fancy but they were all most interesting. In the short term it was agreed that there should be two sub committees. One will be to consider the slip and the other the clubhouse. Mike Kennan will co ordinate the committee and the members will not necessarily come from the general committee.

The Hon Secretary reported that he had received letters of thanks from the guests who attended the Fitting Out Dinner. He has written to the RYA amending details of the club. He is also in touch with our MP about Tax exemption for sports clubs. Mark has also received masses of correspondence, which he has put on the relevant notice boards

The Hon Treasurer reported that the financial state of the club is reasonably healthy. He has the subs to look forward to!! He agreed that we need to do the work on the slip but said that we should be aware that there are no guarantees with the kind of work we have to do when the sea is involved and we should be cautious. He is aware that the work carried out by members saves the club a great deal of money and said that the Social Events are very helpful.

The Hon Membership Secretary. Stan has sent out the bills for subs along with the forms for boats in the yard. He has already had some replies. Eleven people have been billed for not launching. The sub committee for membership interviewed four prospective new members. The proposed new members are Mr and Mrs Rodney Smith to become House members, Mr Brian Lewis also for House membership and Mr Ronald Williams to become a Full member. He is the new owner of Mystic. The sub committee recommended them all to the committee and a ballot was held by the General Committee in which all were in favour. We welcome them to the Sailing Club. Stan was not happy that some people had not turned up for the Fitting Out Dinner but he was pleased that the New Members welcome packs are available.

The Social Committee. The Commodore read the report to the committee. There is a shortage of social committee members and Doreen will ring round to try to find others willing to help. All dates as printed in the diary will be honoured. The next event will be the Spring Cocktail Party.

A.O.B The Club Development Officer suggested that we should consider enlarging the web site to accommodate photographs of activities. There had been about 201 hits since Christmas. Whilst it was an interesting suggestion some members did not feel that we got much benefit from the web site at this time and as we are going to spend a lot of money very soon the matter was left in abeyance.

During the course of the meeting it became apparent that we need to raise as much money as we can. It was therefore decided that all money that we raise this year would be for the benefit of our club. We need extra events to the published ones and we also need help to make them happen. Have you any ideas? If you can suggest anything please do so, it will not oblige you to run them. Send them to me or to any committee member, verbally, by post or email. Please remember that every little helps.
