*NEW* BSC Club Discussion Forum
JUNE 2009
COMMENT During this month we shall have the longest day and midsummer’s day, hard to think that we are already half way through summer when we haven’t had the pleasure of anything much along those lines. I haven’t heard a cuckoo this year; they are reported to be in smaller numbers. However if they are around they will no longer be making the cuckoo call as that fades as the months pass, no wonder I think I have not had any summer
Thank you to those members who have sent me their e-mail addresses. It makes it much easier to distribute the newsletters and those people who do not get into the clubhouse are sure of having a copy. If you cannot get to the club and want to have a copy posted to you please get in touch with Stan Warren, he does the postal side of things. If for any reason you change your email address please let me know as a wrong address throws a spanner in my works!
I sometimes wonder why we need a newsletter in the clubhouse. My aim is to report anything of interest that may be happening, to keep members informed of what the various committees are doing on their behalf and also to inform members on other matters. The information is not always what members would like to hear, some may think that it is boring, but it is in the newsletter so that good use can be made of it by those who need it and it is the quickest way of dispersing information. I sometimes think that I am wasting my time when I hear “I didn’t know about that” or “I’ve never been told about that “ when it has been published in the newsletter either in the reports from various committees or just as a message from the General Committee. My plea is that members will read through and sift out what is relevant to them,
In a couple of weeks Claire Meadows will be in Africa where she hopes to do some teaching and to be helping children out there, in other ways. I’m sure we all wish her safe and well. It’s a good way to spend her holiday period and I hope she enjoys it too.

The following are some notes from the general committee meeting 9th June 09.
The Commodore said that he had little to report. He said that it was a pity the Kathrine had resigned. He reminded us that there would be a visit of boats from Hoylake on Saturday 4th July. They will camp at the club, on the lawn or in the clubhouse, as they will be in day boats. There is a barbecue and disco in the evening. The poster will be on the board for names and numbers of members who want tickets.
The Vice Commodore gave the following notes from the Sailing Committee:
Altmouth Cup Race 21st June, 2009: P Wright was pleased to inform the meeting that the Liverpool Yacht Club boat “Gulmarin” would be available for the event. I Cowell said P Wright and himself had been engaged in discussion over the allocation of awards in the Altmouth Cup Race.
The following formula is a suggestion:
- Altmouth Cup & Replica: Class “A” – Best performing boat in IRC Class “A” or PY Number 1050 or less.
- The Formby Cup & Replica: Class “B” – Best performing boat in IRC Class “B” or PY Number 1051 or more.
- Altmouth Cup Portsmouth Yardstick Award – The Abbott Cup & Replica Best performing PY Boat.
- Channel Trophy – The Carlyta Cup & Replica Best performing IRC boat.
- The Len Myerscough Trophy.
- The best performing Class “A” or Class ”B” boat moored in the River Alt.
The formula would ensure that the faster boats in the BSC Club could have a chance of gaining the Altmouth Cup and ensure a more even distribution of prizes amongst the remaining competitors. The Committee agreed.
Altmouth Cup Race 8th August 2010: I Cowell said Jenny Whittingham-Jones would list this date in the Kindred Clubs List when published.
Club Insurance: P Wright said that David Griffiths was now in possession of the Club Policy and Schedule. Once David was in possession of all the facts he would then advise the Club of his findings.
Emergency Moorings: C Loughran said the new chain, risers and shackles was now stored in the Yard Hut. A working party would be required to remove the old chain and put the new chain in place. After photographing the new chain could be put in place on a neap tides weekend either in July or August of this year. The insurance for these moorings will then be looked into.
Visit of Hoylake Sailing Club on 4th July 2009: I Cowell has sent a letter to Hoylake that. The Social Committee are to arrange a BBQ and Disco for he evening of their stay.
The Committee then addressed the question of laying moorings for the visitors.I Cowell had obtained a quote from J Tiere & Co for top grade White 3 strand 16mm propylene rope. The cost was either 70p/metre of £88.00 plus VAT for a 220metres reel. The Committee resolved that a reel of 220metres should be purchased.
W Woods suggested that a working party should be set up for Thursday 2nd July, 2009, and the rope, with incorporated pick-up knots and floats, placed between a number of vacated moorings to which the Opera boats could be tied. The 25ft motor boat and two additional boats could also be secured to vacant moorings or Club Emergency Moorings. This was agreed. Club members would be called upon to ferry the visitors ashore. Final arrangements would be made when the actual number of visitors was known. It is 29 years since they visited before.
Big Yellow Buoy: P Wright said that he and a number of members of the Committee would attempt to inflate the buoy and decide what use it could be put to!
Race Officers Mooring Buoy: Despite the best endeavours of S Markland and P Wright, using a metal detector provided by Austin Bridges and GPS co-ordinates provided by S Markland, they had been unable to recover the steel frame to which the buoy had been attached. P Wright suggested that a heavy anchor be obtained or manufactured to which a buoy could be attached by chain. The anchor could be sited at the beginning of a season and removed at the end of each season. This was agreed.
Albert Dock Mini Cruise: I Cowell said that a total of eleven Club boats were scheduled to visit the Albert Dock from the 6th to 20th June 2009.
Club Captain’s Report: M Kennan asked whether any more perch tops were needed for the River Alt channel perches. It was agreed the existing perch tops were sufficient for the present season
Yard & Berth Masters Report: C Loughran said he had received an application from J Hall for mooring N29, which he intended to recommend to the General Committee. He had also received and application from S Quinn for mooring N25. To the best of his knowledge and belief, C Loughran said that the moorings for “Cibe” and “Dimidea” did not seem to exist. Moreover, the moorings for Ariel and Mahala had not been replaced or refurbished..
C Loughran said he had received notice that “Mayrose”, “Gizmo” and “Dawntreader” were to be launched this weekend, about half of the Club’s boats had yet to be launched.
Date of Next Meeting: Tuesday 7th July, 2009.
The General Committee agreed that the mooring N 29 would go to John Hall. The mooring N24 will be put on the board as usual for two weeks and will be allocated on seniority. One of tide gauges has come off and needs replacing. Apparently it was hit. The Yard and berthing master has placed a list of boats on the board asking for evidence of their insurance.
Candida has been sold to John Holland.
The Rear Commodore Martin told the meeting that this has been an eventful month for the House Committee.
Julie (known to some members from the Hightown Hotel) has been engaged as bar steward. Rex will continue to open the clubhouse but will no longer be able to take the rubbish away. The possibility of having a weekly collection for which the club will have to pay will be looked into.
The new till will be set in place and will be working in the next week.
Martin will attend a meeting in Hightown where Graham Lymberry will be speaking about how the coastline will be defended; this will include the seawall, which needs repairs.
With reference to club maintenance each house committee member will be allocated responsibility for each task. A rota has already been put in place for cutting the grass.
The stopcock for the tap to the bath by the black hut has now been fitted inside and can be isolated from there.
BOB CHAMBERLAIN ASKED WHERE THE LARGE WHEELBARROW IS FROM THE BLACK HUT. HAS ANYONE BORROWED IT? IF SO PLEASE REPLACE IT IN THE CORRECT PLACE.
The Hon Treasurer The audit shows that we are in a fairly healthy state. There is no news concerning the massive rise in the rates for both yard and clubhouse yet. Stan Warren proposed that the club joins the Sefton Sports Council and he will look into that and will attend the next meeting.
The Hon Secretary is on holiday. He has received an invitation to an RNLI event which David Flynn will attend.Bob now has a list of club officers for Liverpool Y.C and for Tranmere SC if anyone needs to know.
Sefton Council will hold a Coastal Forum on 27th June.
Notification of a N Wales Boat Jumble is on the notice board.
He has received a letter and invitation from the producers of a TV programme “look Good Naked!
The Hon Membership Secretary Stan is still trying to contact the last few members who have not paid their subs. Six people have resigned this year. Please pay as soon as possible.
The Social Committee The Committee met last Friday to discuss the Barbecue and disco and the visit of the Hoylake Sailing Club. It is thought that there will be about twenty-five people visiting. The Clubhouse will be open for them and there will be a breakfast before they leave on the Sunday.
