The main topic of conversation around the clubhouse recently has inevitably concerned the weather. Long spells of humidity, scorching sunshine interspersed with deluges of rain and in the main little or no wind on most days. There was so much water in the river that one day this week the boats did not turn with the tide. We have had a plague of wasps and black beetles coming inside for shelter. Last Sunday I found our goldfish floating on top of the water, the pond temperature having risen. Being scooped out into a bucket of cooler rainwater until the pond could be cooled saved them. In addition to all that we should have been able to see meteor showers on Wednesday but couldn't see any for the cloud cover. Amazingly the particles are only as large as a pea but they are visible because they travel at 130,000 miles per hour.

I chose the black hut for the cover this month because that too has given rise to concern. Kieran Riley has repaired the bottom, recently vandalised. Some members of the club would like to see the black hut demolished and replaced with a small container but it is my opinion that to do this would be as much trouble as repairs, however large to the black hut. The hut is part of the history of the club so why think to destroy it just before celebrating the centenary of the club?

The General Committee met on the 10th of August. The main topics were not so much about sailing, but about the logistics of the club as you will read in my following notes.

THE GENERAL COMMITTEE

Apologies were received from Stan Warren and Simon Markland.

Both the Commodore and the Vice Commodore did not have formal reports to present
Watch out for the date of a working party in the laying up yard to take place sometime in September.

Many congratulations to Kathrine Hogarth for raising £351 on her bike for the club's building fund or something more specific to be decided at a later date.

THE HON TREASURER David gave the committee a detailed breakdown of our financial situation at present. The building work had come in on target wonderfully. However we will have some running costs and inevitably some contingencies will arise. An increasing cost will be insurance for the clubhouse. David read out some of the detailed questions he had to answer, some straightforward and some ludicrous. The result of this questionnaire will affect the use of the clubhouse for all of us.
Two immediate ones are:
1 NO FIREWORKS IN THE VICINITY OF THE CLUBHOUSE.

2.ALL GUESTS MUST BE SIGNED IN. The book is on the bar by the bell. This does not apply to official social events.

David then told the meeting that he would resign as Hon Treasurer at the end of this year as he has fulfilled his promised time.

THE REAR COMMODORE gave the report of the House Committee. There is some difficulty with the coolers in the bar but Trevor Meyers will deal with this through the suppliers. The house committee had a long talk about vandalism and it has been decided that the stones outside will either have to be removed and replaced or fixed permanently. They are being used to damage the shutters and anything else the youth of Hightown can target. It is rare to go to the clubhouse during the day and not find them doing something. The locks on the gates will also have to be changed soon as far too many non-members know the combination. Please close the gate each time you use it.

The House committee also has a list of refurbishing proposals, some of which will be costly. These were put before the General Committee and it was unanimously decided that the installation of central heating would have to be deferred, so hang on to your thermals.

The New Insurance rules will affect the hiring of the clubhouse and therefore a new hiring agreement will be drawn up with more details later.

When closing time arrives in the bar please do not continue to order drinks unless a flag officer takes over the serving, as the bar staff have set hours. Also it has been noted that Kathryn has been left to close the shutters on some occasions. Members are asked to help with this before leaving.

There will be a NO SMOKING notice put in the new area of the clubhouse. This is the new area with the carpet opposite the bar. It has no ventilation

THE HON SECRETARY reported that he had dealt with correspondence and had also been in touch with the coastguard regarding the proposed visit. There are no details as yet.
The lucky winners of THE 200 CLUB prizes in July were Cedric Loughran, Carole Fielding and Harry Conalty. It is never too late to join the 200 Club, just ask Mark for a form.

THE HON MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY was absent from the meeting but the Commodore presided over the vote and there was a unanimous welcome for a new full member Mr Edward Arch of St Georges Road Hightown. We wish him happy sailing.

THE SOCIAL COMMITTEE will hold a social event on the 4th September and asks for your support.

STAFFING. This year sees the end of the present Commodore's term of office and the Annual General Meeting will be a busy one.
There will be vacancies for a Yard and Berthing Master, a Secretary and a Treasurer. There will also be elections for a Rear Commodore and members of the General Committee. The commodore says that we need to think of these replacements soon as the closing date is the end of October.

The Commodore closed the meeting.

I have recently been asked several times why the Myercough Trophy was not awarded in 2003. The reason is that there wasn't a boat eligible for the award due to the small number of BSC members who completed the race. As you will see the finish needs five BSC boats.

With Prizegiving taking place in November I thought that this would be a good time to restate the requirements for winning some of the cups and trophies.

DIVISION A CUP. The Jubilee (Summer Celebration) Race winner

ALT CUP The Bank Holiday Series winner

THE ALTMOUTH CUP The Class A winner or outright winner.

THE FORMBY CUP the class B winner

THE ABBOT CUP The best BSC boat under the Portsmouth Yardstick.

THE MYERSCOUGH TROPHY. The best BSC boat not winning 1st 2nd 3rd or the Formby Cup.

THE GEORGE BUTLER CUP The best BSC boat in class B of the T.S.C I.O.M race.

A PEWTER GIG.BOX The best circuit in the RNLI Novelty Race.

THE RANZO TROPHY The winner of the Puffin Island Race.

THE RATTRAY TROPHY The winner of the Rattray race.

THE ARDEA CUP the helmswoman of the winning boat in the Ladies Race.

THE CRUISING CUP The log assessed to win by giving an account of a Cruise, starting and finishing at the Alt.

THE TRAVELLERS TROPHY Awarded for an account of a sailing achievement in any area.

THE STEPHENSON TROPHY The best newcomer to racing.

THE HARRY SWINBURNE TROPHY Awarded for endeavour

THE COLLEY CUP The best performing Bilge Keel boat.

A SILVER CIGARETTE BOX Winner of the Last Chance race

THE COMMODORE'S CUP. To a member who has made an excellent contribution to the club. (Commodore's Choice)

THE MANX TROPHY to the first BSC boat to reach the IOM from the Alt each season.

THE GEORGE McLEOD TROPHY The Gallon of Ale Race winner.

In addition to these awards there are also replicas and awards made for boats, which are placed.

Prizegiving is always an enjoyable social evening. If you have not yet been to one of our social events give them a go, they are always very enjoyable.

The result of the Gallon of Ale Race was 1st Gazelle 2nd Seel and 3rd Nimrod.

The Conway Cruise and Ranzo Trophy are on Saturday 14th August.

The Ladies Race on Sunday 22nd August and also in August The Bank Holiday Series.

The Last Chance Race will be on Sunday 19th September so there is still time to have a go if you haven't done so yet.
