Minima Yacht Club

Solo Home Page

At Minima Yacht Club the most popular single-handed dinghy is the Solo. The Solo was designed 50 years ago by Jack Holt who lived by the Thames, as a single-handed sailing dinghy with a fully battened sail. Originally constructed in wood it is now available built with modern materials requiring much less maintenance.

The reason for its continued popularity has to be that it is the still the most comfortable and attractive single-hander dinghy available for a wide range of sailors both in weight and age. It is competitive for racing inland and on inshore waters.

Prices range from about £6,000 for new Solos down to about £500 for older second hand Solos. See the Solo class web site.

Solos are raced as a class at Minima on Sunday afternoons. During the Summer we participate in mass-start handicap races against the other Jack Holt designed classes, namely Enterprises and Merlins, on Wednesday evenings and pursuit races on Saturday evenings. Special trophy events are held regularly throughout the year.

We now have a Club Solo. It has been completely refurbished and the sail is only one year old.

The Club Solo is available for a fee of £10.00 a day or £5.00 for paid-up members, as a contribution to costs. There is one restriction: that is that minors and non-members may only use the club dinghies when the rescue launch is manned. Maybe you prefer to try a club boat in preference to owning your own. They are equal to the general level of boat owned by club members.

If you wish to sail a club boat, you sign the Club Boat book in the Race Box before sailing and hand the fee to the Race Officer. You may also book a Club Boat for a future date by making an entry in the Club Boat book marking it clearly as a “Booking”, first come first served!

Non- Members : this is a way of experiencing sailing at Minima and hopefully you will join our Club. You will be made welcome.

If you are already a Solo owner and wish to sail in London: we have have space available in the dinghy park including space for road trailors.

Minima Yacht Club is an ideal location for sailing on the Thames in London with no tidal restrictions, being above Teddington Lock. To find out more: contact the Class Captain or come to the clubhouse on Sunday afternoons or Wednesday or Saturday evenings.
