Cruising and Racing
Safety
Buoyancy aids must be worn whilst sailing and on the jetties. During the winter season, extra safety rules are in force: wet or dry suits must be worn and boats are only allowed on the lake in groups of two or more.
When organised racing is taking place, the committee boat and fast rescue boats are in attendance and use VHF radios.
Cruising
The lake is available to members for general cruising at any time, except when racing is taking place.
Racing
The Club racing day is Sunday, with the main race in the morning and various types of additional races added in the afternoon during the Summer. There are also ad hoc fun races occasionally on Thursday evenings. The race course is set around fixed and moveable marks, depending on the wind conditions for the day. Classes are started at 3 minute intervals and sail a given number of laps until they cross a finish line. Once a month there is a Pursuit race where the start time for each class is staggered according to a handicap so that, on average, they should all cross the finish line together.
If a particular type of boat can 'field' a certain minimum number over two seasons, it gets Class status and is then entitled to its own start. All other boats sail in the Menagerie Fleet, by handicap.
The racing rules are prescribed by the RYA.
Administration
Races are organised by the duty Race Team and all club members participate in the rota. Each team is on duty two or three times a year.
There is a Team Leader who assigns tasks on the day.
Open Meetings
Every Spring the club hosts Open Meetings for the main classes. Visitors from other clubs are invited to participate and we get entrants from across the country.
Learning
Both basic training (Up to RYA Level 2) and race training (RYA Level 4) courses have been held over the past few years. For information for the current year see the training page .
