The Henley Offshore Group (HOG)
was formed in 1991 and quickly attracted more than 60 members
interested in offshore sailing and boating, whether they owned boats
or not. A full schedule of talks by speakers eminent in the boating
world take place during the winter months from September until May,
with a club picnic in June and a programme of summer rallies, plus
the occasional club charter to give members a completely new boating
experience. Members come from a wide area, centred on
Henley-on-Thames. New members are cordially welcome, the only
requirement being an interest in or curiosity about yachting, both
sail and power. There are also opportunities for non boat owners to
sail with other members.
To touch on some previous highlights, the Henley
Offshore Group has had speakers ranging from author Tom Cunliffe about his own
boats and travels; to Basil d' Oliviera on navigation; Peter Bruce on the
intricacies of the Solent and Dorset coasts; yachtswomen Tracey Edwards and
Ellen MacArthur on the challenges of ocean racing, and numerous adventurers to
both near and far flung coasts. We have spent weekends together in Cowes,
Lymington, Itchenor, Beaulieu, picniced in Studland Bay, and chased the eclipse
in the area of full totality. We have twice charted the Sail Training
Association's three masted topsail schooner
Sir Winston Churchill, chartered racing yachts for the Round the Island
Race, and this Autumn will return to the Thames sailing barge Xylonite
to take part in an East Coast race.
