9th July, 2009

Thursday evenings are becoming busier during July, as we now accommodate a kayaking coaching group in addition to our normal Family members and visitors - this week, in spite of Meryl's absence, we served up four dozen hot bacon rolls and had just about every craft available on the water. Thanks to our visitors who were commandeered into the galley!

It was lovely to see Rheanna and Barnaby encouraging Jemima Prees (I think it's Jemima - sorry if I've got your name wrong!) in such a caring and supportive way. Jemima the fearless loves to drive the Sniper with the outboard motor, whilst her Dad is expert at repairing holes in the sides of dinghies. All in all, excellent!

What has been especially rewarding is the number of new sailors 'going solo'. Georgie Tucker, for example, is increasingly confident and jumps into the West 11, Sweet Pickle and Tom's Moth at the drop of a hat, whilst Andrew Barrett (not pictured here) will sail Tom's Moth in just about any conditions. Katherine Soley, pictured here in the West 11 with Tom, has become so keen that she has now bought her own Mirror - all this from hating the water just a few weeks ago! Richard Llewellyn also went solo at the weekend and we have several more new sailors in the pipeline.

Our Sunday morning sailing sessions are growing in popularity, but with the school holidays approaching it is also possible to make mid-week bookings for informal sailing instruction. If you're interested, contact Tom via our Contact page.

28th May, 2009

Another very busy beautiful summer evening (Meryl served over three dozen bacon rolls!) Lots of children made it a real 'family' evening and we had a good variety of craft on the water. There was enough breeze (just) to put the West 11 out for a sail, and we were pleased to welcome some new members. Visitors welcome, so if you haven't been to one of our Family Boating Evenings, and would like to spend an enjoyable evening by (or on) the river, do come along! (Under 18s must be adult accompanied)

16th April, 2009

Last week it was dark and gloomy; this week it was dark, gloomy and rainy! However, undaunted, our intrepid water voles took to the river in delightful abandon and enjoyed an active and enjoyable evening. Good family representation and a variety of craft on the water, so all was well and Meryl rushed off her feet in the galley!

9th April, 2009

Another good turn-out on what promised to be a cloudy, rainy evening, but which was actually not bad at all. We were pleased to welcome several prospective members and hope that they and their children enjoyed the evening. Mary certainly served up a high number of hot bacon rolls - delicious!

Thanks to John Bird for bringing some high quality bacon from Devizes market!

Yawn, stretch, blink sleepily..... sniff

open an eye... sniff the air inquisitively

Hello everyone - we're waking up after the winter!

Family Boating Evenings will begin again on Thursday 2nd April.

Families and prospective members welcome as visitors, but under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

6.00pm

Hope to see you there!

Thursday 21st August

Another busy and enjoyable evening with 22 in attendance representing 10 families. We were pleased to welcome visitors all the way from Yorkshire - us local yokels showed them 'ow to 'av a good time!

A nice westerly breeze meant that there was an opportunity for sailing and it was good to see Maddie Bourn helming the Barrow Boat, whilst the Patrick family provided some entertainment in that respect.

We got through 4 dozen hot bacon rolls this week!

Thursday 14th August

Rain, then shine, then rain, then shine - and then a glorious evening! Who says our river isn't tidal? The level was going up and down like a yo-yo all evening, but it was a very successful Family Boating Evening again, with 22 people representing 11 families in attendance. And we munched our way through three dozen hot bacon butties!

FBE is on again next Thursday (21st) but is not going to be held on Thursday 28th August.

Thursday 8th August

Another enjoyable evening - fifteen in attendance representing ten families!

Thanks to Andy Shaw who deputised as Master Chef in Mary's absence. A nice variety of craft on the water and in spite of an early shower everyone had an active and enjoyable evening!

If you haven't been to one of our Family Boating Evenings, do come along - you're very welcome!

Thursday 31st July

Family Boating Evening

Over thirty people attended the Family Boating Evening on 31st July, representing thirteen families!

We had a nice selection of boats available - including 'Tom Soppy' with an electric outboard, a Barrow Boat for rowing, the Banana Boat, Mary's 'Daisy', the small Rescue Boat with an outboard motor, and the usual kayaks from the Canoe Shed.

Mary did an excellent job of supplying hot Bacon Butties and the predicted heavy rainfall held off until after we'd packed and gone home to bed!

Two items of Lost Property:

1) a grey zip-front child's kagoule with a high visibility band across the back.

2) a dark blue zip-front 'Trespass' child's kagoule, age 5/6

These items are in the Lost Property box in the Ladies' Changing Room. If unclaimed by 1st September they will be disposed of.
